Who lives with a doll as a partner
The clearest picture comes from small studies of owners. A 2018 survey of 83 owners recruited on forums found that most were heterosexual, white, employed, middle-aged men; just over half were not in a relationship, and about half lived alone. Non-sexual companionship came up often, and the authors proposed the term “allodoll”. They also warned that a forum sample may be skewed.
Owners use their dolls in different ways. A 2022 study built on 5 in-depth interviews and 131 written accounts found mostly single heterosexual men: some used the doll mainly for sex, some as a stand-in for a partner and some as what the authors call “synthetic partners”. A broader 2023 survey in Germany of 3,564 people found that 3.9% had used very realistic dolls or robots, more often in later-born generations. For a partner you see every day, the face is what you live with, and owners on doll forums single out Sanhui’s faces for their realism.
Doll partner or toy: what the studies found
Researchers have only recently started to measure how owners see their dolls, and the results do not fit a single stereotype.
Study
Who took part
What it found
2023, Journal of Sex Research
217 owners
104 saw the doll as a toy and 113 as a partner; the partner group scored moderately higher on hostility toward women and on attributing human traits to objects
2023, Journal of Sex Research
158 owners and 135 non-owners
No meaningful difference on most traits; owners scored lower on proneness to sexual aggression, but more often saw women as “unknowable” and the world as “dangerous”, and had lower sexual self-esteem
2026, Journal of Sex Research
29 owners of dolls and robots, interviewed three times
Owners knowingly “suspended disbelief” and described a kind of mutual care
2018, Robotics
83 owners from forums
Non-sexual companionship was common; just over half were single
The authors of the 158-owner study concluded that there is no evidence owners are more dangerous than other people. The same studies show real differences inside the group, so one label for all owners misses a lot. Whichever way you see your doll, you choose who she is: Sanhui’s standard line pairs about 40 heads with bodies from 150 to 168 cm.
Loneliness, companionship and a sense of care
For many owners the doll is company first. About half of the owners in the 2018 survey lived alone. In interviews published in 2026, owners said they knew the doll was not alive, chose to suspend disbelief and felt a kind of mutual care in return. Small details carry that sense of presence: Sanhui says most of its heads have eyes you can turn toward you, and with Agile Eyes you set how wide each eye opens.
What research cannot say yet is whether a doll eases loneliness or deepens it. A 2020 review found “an almost total lack of empirical analyses” of the psychology of doll ownership, and the first systematic review, also from 2020, counted 29 publications from 1993 to 2019, only 17 of them peer-reviewed and most of them theoretical. Its authors called for studies of both the risks and the opportunities for sexual and social well-being.
Family, friends and privacy
Studies say little so far about how relatives react, and each household decides for itself. A 2007 film imagines a small town that chooses to treat a shy man’s doll as if she were real; that film and others are in sex robot movies. If you share a home, three decisions make delivery day easy.
01
Decide who needs to know
Anyone who shares your home will see a large box arrive: up to 160 cm (63 in) long for Sanhui’s standard bodies and 175 cm (69 in) for the tallest AIO models. Decide in advance what you will tell them.
02
Plan where the doll stays
Store her in a relaxed pose in a closet, on a bed or in a case. For a private, lockable spot, Sanhui offers a flight case with wheels and a lock as a $600 option on its order form. Hanging needs a special eye bolt with a hook, which Sanhui sells separately.
03
Decide what goes online
Sanhui’s 2017 manual asked owners not to show their doll undressed in public or online. Photos are hard to take back once posted; sharing doll pictures covers forum rules and copyright.
The practical side of a doll partner
A partner doll is also a heavy object that needs regular handling and care, so six things are worth planning before she arrives. The Sanhui review collects what owners report after a year or two.
Weight
Listed weights for standard bodies run from 28 kg (62 lb) at 150 cm to 38 kg (84 lb), and the tallest AIO models reach 53 kg (117 lb). If you will move her often, start from the lighter bodies.
Joints
The Flexi Edition skeleton, standard on full-size Sanhui dolls, is designed for a wide range of poses. Reset the doll before a new pose and never force a joint: owners on doll forums report joints loosening over one to two years. Details in the Sanhui skeleton guide.
Care
Sanhui advises showering the doll rather than soaking it and powdering the skin once it is dry. Store her in a relaxed pose, because silicone left bent for a long time creases and can tear.
Repairs
Buy direct and Sanhui covers free repairs for six months; you pay shipping both ways and report problems within 48 hours of delivery. A store sets its own warranty, and where Sanhui sells explains whose terms apply. Later repairs are paid, and a glued tear leaves a visible seam.
Space
Boxes for 150–168 cm dolls measure up to 160×45×40 cm (63×18×16 in). Keep the doll between 5 and 35 °C (41–95 °F) and out of direct sun.
Cost
As of October 2026, Sanhui lists standard bodies from $2,599 and AIO models up to $4,799 before options, with shipping included to qualifying countries; Sanhui doll basics compares sizes and prices. A spare wig or a spare pair of eyes costs $30 and gives her a new look.

Sex doll wife or partner: FAQ
What does sex doll wife mean?
It is an informal term for a doll that an owner treats as a spouse or partner. In a 2023 study of 217 owners, 113 saw their doll as a partner and 104 as a toy. A 2007 newspaper report noted that owners talking online called each other “idollators”; it is not a research term.
Is it unhealthy to have a doll as a partner?
Research has no clear answer yet. A 2020 review found almost no empirical studies of what doll ownership means psychologically. A 2023 study comparing 158 owners with 135 non-owners found no meaningful difference on most traits and no evidence that owners are more dangerous. If loneliness or low mood weighs on you, a doctor or counselor can help.
Who usually has a doll partner?
Studies so far describe mostly single heterosexual men, many of them middle-aged and often recruited through owner forums, which can skew the picture. A 2023 survey in Germany found that 3.9% of the 3,564 people asked had used a very realistic doll or robot, more often in later-born generations.
How do people keep a doll partner private?
By planning: decide who in the household needs to know, keep a storage spot such as a closet or a lockable case, and think before posting photos. Sanhui offers a flight case with wheels and a lock for $600, and its 2017 manual asked owners not to show the doll undressed online.
Can a doll sit at the table or on the couch?
Yes. Sanhui’s Flexi Edition skeleton, standard on its full-size dolls, is designed for a wide range of poses, sitting included. Its 2017 manual says not to force poses, to reset the doll before changing position and to store it relaxed. Standing should be brief, on a flat surface, with support.
